CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer claimed a 2-0 shutout against Husson University on Saturday afternoon in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener for both teams on Ritchie Field.
Evan Backus' (Farmington, Maine) header was redirected into net off a defender by teammate Liam Welch (Temple, Maine) following a Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) throw in, to put the Mariners up 1-0 in the 26th minute and Ryan Holmes (Newmarket, N.H.) added an insurance goal in the 77th minute, heading in a corner kick from Caron, to give the Mariners the 2-0 victory.
Maine Maritime's Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) stopped all five shots he faced to earn the win, while Husson's Benjamin Powell also collected five saves in the loss.
With the win the Mariners improve to 3-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference, while the Eagles fall to 1-4-0 overall and 0-1 in the NAC. Maine Maritime returns to action next Saturday, September 21 when they travel to SUNY Delhi for a 1:00 pm NAC matchup.
