CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer hosted Unity College in a Monday night non-conference game on Ritchie Field, picking up a 7-0 victory.
Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) opened the scoring for the Mariners in the 7th minute when he received a pass from Andrew King (Thomaston, Maine) and lasered it past Unity's Sam Napper. The Mariners had several chances in the next 30 minutes before Ryan Holmes (Newmarket, N.H.) headed in a Caron corner kick in the 38th minute to give the Mariners a 2-0 lead. Caron found Reuben Harrison (Heidelberg, Germany) in the 45th minute on a cross that Harrison baried in the top right corner to give the Mariners a 3-0 halftime lead.
The Mariners didn't waste any time putting the ball in the back of the net to start the second half, as Brad McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) headed in a cross from Colby Clarke (Ellsworth, Maine) to take a 4-0 lead in the 49th minute. The Mariners struck again in the 53rd minute when King found Liam Welch (Temple, Maine) for a finish in the bottom left corner to go up 5-0. Jacob Olson (Charleston, Maine) gave the Mariners a 6-0 lead in the 60th minute as he rocked home a shot from McKechnie. Andrew Coleman (Saco, Maine) drilled a free kick into the upper left corner in the 80th minute to score the seventh and final goal.
Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) finished the night with a clean slate picking up the win, seeing zero shots on goals. Napper saved seven of the 14 shots on goal in the loss.
The Mariners return to action on Saturday, September 28th, when they are on the road at the University of Maine at Farmington in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup at 1:00pm.
