CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer defeated SUNY Canton 2-0 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
With the win the Mariners improve to 6-2-1 on the season and 3-1-0 in conference, while Canton drops to 5-5-2 overall and 3-2-0 in conference.
After a back and forth first half, both teams were held scoreless at halftime with the Mariners outshooting the Roos 8-5.
Senior Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) put the Mariners on the board with a free kick from 30 yards out that was deflected and found the bottom right corner in the 54th minute. Junior Ryan Holmes (Newmarket, N.H.) added an insurance goal when he headed in a corner kick from Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine) in the 62nd minute.
Freshman Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) picked up the clean slate win for the Mariner stopping all eight shots on goal. Canton's Dawson Pellerin made three saves on five shots on goal.
Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, October 6, when they host Middlebury College in a non-conference matchup at 2:00 pm on Ritchie Field.
