Mariners Fall to No. 15 Middlebury

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer team fell to No. 15 Middlebury College 5-1 on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Ritchie Field.

With the loss, the Mariners drop to 6-3-1 on the season, while Middlebury improves to 6-1-3 overall.

After a scoreless 20 minutes, Middlebury's Henry Wilhelm was able to put it past Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) to take a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. The Mariners responded only minutes later when Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) headed in a redirection from Reuben Harrison (Heidelberg, Germany) off of a Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) throw to tie it up at 1-1 in the 26th minute. Middlebury was able to score another goal late in the first half when Ben Powers headed a Drew Goulart cross into the bottom left corner in the 41st minute to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead at the half.

The Panthers extended their lead to 3-1 in the 49th minute when Brendan Barry buried a shot past Gray to the bottom right corner. Goulart tacked on another goal for Middlebury in the 59th minute to extend the lead to 4-1. Jacob Charles added the final goal for the Panthers as he headed in a throw from Tanner Hellickson in the 85th minute to make it 5-1.

Gray tied a career-high 10 saves on the day in the loss, while Ryan Grady made three saves in the win for the Panthers.

Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, October 12th, when they host Northern Vermont-Johnson in a North Atlantic Conference matchup at 12:00 pm.
