CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer shutout Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.
Prior to the game the Mariners honored their senior players: Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine), Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine), Andrew Coleman (Saco, Maine), Jack Davis (Belfast, Maine), Andrew King (Thomaston, Maine), Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine), Jeremy Spiegel (West Chester, Pa.) and Liam Welch (Temple, Maine).
With the win, the Mariners improve to 8-3-1 overall and 5-1 in the NAC, while Lyndon falls to 0-12-0 on the season and 0-6 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, October 15 at Bates College for an 8:00 pm non-conference matchup.
Caron put the Mariners on the board 92 seconds into the game, when he tallied his sixth goal of the season and Backus tallied his fourth goal of the year in the eighth minute when he headed in a ball on a corner kick.
Davis scored his first goal of the year in the 19th minute on a penalty kick to send the Mariners into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.
Thomas Gordon (Portland, Maine) added his first career goal early in the second half to close out the scoring for the Mariners.
Coleman earned the win in net for the Mariners, collecting one save in just over 28 minutes of play, while teammate Maxwell Tomlin (Monroe, Maine) stopped all three shots he faced and Lyndon's Caleb Derbyshire recorded nine saves in net.
