Caron Lifts Men's Soccer Over Bates

LEWISTON, Maine – Senior Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) scored in the 83rd minute to lift Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer over Bates College, 2-1 on Tuesday night in non-conference action at Garcelon Field.

With the win, the first over Bates since 2014 and second all-time in 15 meetings, the Mariners improve to 9-3-1 overall, while the Bobcats fall to 8-3-1 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, when they travel to Southern Maine for a 7:00 pm non-conference contest.

Caron found teammate Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) for the first goal of the game in the 28th minute and the Mariners took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Bobcats tied things up in the 67th minute, when Owen Keleher's initial shot was blocked by a Mariner defender and teammate Ciaran Bardong snuck the rebound in for the score, but a corner kick from Caron deflected off a Bates defender in the 83rd minute to seal the victory for the Mariners.

Freshman Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) was impressive in net for the Mariners, stopping eight shots on goal to earn the victory, while David Goodstein collected two saves in the loss for Bates.

The Bobcats, ranked 25th in the most recent D3soccer.com poll, outshot the Mariners 26-9. Maine Maritime is the first team to score more than one goal against the Bobcats this season.
