GORHAM, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy defeated the University of Southern Maine 3-1 on Saturday night in a non-conference matchup at Hannaford Field.
With the win the Mariners improve to 10-3-1 overall on the season, while the Huskies drop to 0-13-3 overall with the loss.
The Mariners quickly got on the board early when Southern Maine's Cameron Atherton surrendered an own goal off of a Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) throw in to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute. The Mariners would take the one goal lead into the half outshooting the Huskies 9-5 at the break.
Caron quickly extended the lead, scoring early in the second half as he finished a feed from Pieter Oudejans to make it 2-0. Caron would score his 10th goal of the season and second of the game in the 58th minute to make it 3-0 Mariners. The Huskies would answer in the 70th minute when Noah Perry beat Andrew Coleman (Saco, Maine) to make it 3-1. The Mariners outshot the Huskies 14-10 on the night.
Coleman made five saves in 76 minutes of action and the win for the Mariners, while Maxwell Tomlin (Monroe, Maine) saw zero shots in the final 14 minutes of relief. Atherton made three saves in 62 minutes of action for the Huskies, while Dalton Cassidy made one save in 28 minutes of action in the loss.
The Mariners return to action on Saturday, March 26, when they travel to take on the University of Maine at Presque Isle in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup, scheduled for 1:00 PM.
