PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer defeated the University of Maine at Presque Isle 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup.
With the win the Mariners improve to 11-3-1 overall and 6-1 in the NAC, while the Owls drop to 6-8-0 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
The Mariners broke the scoreless tie in the 23rd minute, when Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) found Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead, which held until halftime. The Mariners outshot the Owls 8-4 in the first half.
Backus extended the Mariners lead early in the second half as he beat Presque Isle's Keith Mank in the 50th minute on a feed from Caron to make it 2-0 Mariners. Backus scored his second goal of the game in the 73rd minute off an assist from Caron to make the lead 3-0. Andrew King (Thomaston, Maine) added on one more goal in the 82nd minute off another Caron assist to make it 4-0. The Mariners outshot the Owls 16-5 on the day.
With five points, Caron surpassed 100 career points, becoming just the third MMA men's soccer to do so, and currently sits second all-time, behind B.C. Voyou.
Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) and Andrew Coleman (Saco, Maine) split time in net for the Mariners, Gray added three saves while Coleman registered one save in the win. Mank made four saves in the loss for the Owls.
The Mariners close out the regular season on Tuesday, October 29, when they travel to Waterville, Maine to take on Thomas College in a NAC matchup at 5:00 PM.
