CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's soccer defeated Husson University 5-1 in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Semifinal matchup at Ritchie Field.
With the win the Mariners improve to 13-3-1 overall, with the loss the Eagles season comes to a close with an overall record of 6-13-1. Maine Maritime will take on Thomas College tomorrow in the NAC Championship game at Ritchie Field, scheduled for 2:30 pm.
Reuben Harrison (Heidelberg, Germany) put the Mariners on the board 41 seconds into the game, when he beat Husson's charging goalie and snuck the ball into net to make it 1-0 Mariners. Husson's Gavon Fox tied things up only minutes later in the fourth minute, when a cross bounced off the cross bar and was tipped past Mariner keeper Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine). Liam Welch (Temple, Maine) scored the eventual game winner, when he headed in a throw in from Matt Caron (Scarborough, Maine) in the eighth minute to give the Mariners the 2-1 lead.
Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine) added to the Mariners' lead in 24th minute when a cross played forward by Caron bounced around in front of the net and Moore finished it in the left corner, making it 3-1. Colby Clarke (Ellsworth, Maine) played a ball ahead in the 41st minute to Caron who beat Benjamin Powell.
Brad McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) finished a rebound off of a Harrison shot in the 60th minute to push the Maine Maritime lead to 5-1. The Mariners held an 18-15 advantage in shots.
Gray made two saves in the win for the Mariners, while Powell made one save in 45 minutes of action for the Eagles and Kyle Townsend made two saves in 45 minutes of relief.
