CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy's Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) has been named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman teammate Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) has been named the NAC Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week.
Backus helped lead the Mariners to a 1-1 week, and was instrumental in limiting opponents' scoring opportunities. Tasked with covering the opposing team's most explosive midfielders, he shut down Colby's offense until the double-overtime heartbreaker ended 2-1 on Wednesday. Backus led the Mariners' to a shutout against Husson in their NAC opener, and also assisted on what ended up being the game-winning goal in the 2-0 victory.
Gray recorded 135 minutes of shutout action in net over the Mariners' 1-1 week. He logged three saves in the first half of the 2-1 double-overtime loss to NESCAC's Colby College, and stopped all five shots he faced in the Mariners' 2-0 win over Husson in the NAC opener. The first-year keeper has not conceded a goal in all four net appearances so far this season.
