CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy's Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) has been named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Soccer Player of the Week, while teammate Trevor Gray (Gorham, Maine) has been named the NAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week and Brad McKechnie (Passadumkeag, Maine) has been named the NAC Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week.
Backus tallied three goals and dished out an assist in a 2-0 week for the Mariners. He first notched a pair of goals against UMaine-Presque Isle to lead the Mariners to a 4-0 win. Backus then scored the game-tying goal against Thomas in the regular season finale, which led to a win and the top seed in the NAC tournament for the Mariners.
Gray lead the Mariners to their seventh shutout of the season on Saturday, starting in net and posting a clean sheet for 45:00 minutes of play, while collecting three saves, in the team's 4-0 win over UMaine-Presque Isle. On Tuesday, Gray made four saves against Thomas, a team previously unbeaten in conference play, to give the Mariners the win and the top seed in the NAC Tournament.
McKechnie scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute to lead Maine Maritime over Thomas on Tuesday night. The Terriers had been undefeated in conference matchups until the final game. The win propelled the Mariners to the top seed in the NAC Tournament.
