Hassett, Wolf, Van Ess, Giacomuzzi and King Named in All-Conference Honors

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy's sophomore John Hassett (Castine, Maine) has been named to the 2019 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Cross Country First Team, while junior Aylen Wolf (Surry, Maine) and sophomore Joseph Van Ess (Mechanicsville, Va.) have been named to 2019 NAC Second Team. Senior Hunter Giacomuzzi (Sebec, Maine) has been named to the 2019 NAC Sportsmanship Team and Maine Maritime's head Coach Ryan King has been named the NAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.

Hassett, a sophomore Marine Systems Engineering major, was Maine Maritime's top runner in seven of eight races this season, including the top overall finisher at the UMPI Invitational, the NVU-Lyndon Invitational and the Bowdoin Invitational II. His win at the UMPI Invitational earned him NAC Runner of the Week honors on September 3. Hassett placed third overall at the NAC Championship to earn a spot on First Team.

Wolf, a junior Vessel Operations Technology major, was a consistent top five finisher for the Mariners all season, including finishing seventh overall at the NVU-Lyndon Invitational and placed at 11th overall at the NAC Championship where he earned Second Team accolades.

Van Ess, a sophomore Vessel Operation Technology major, was one of the Mariners top finishers all season, including leading the Mariners at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational and placed 15th overall at the NAC Championship to earn Second Team honors.

Giacomuzzi, a senior Marine Transportation Operation major, has been named to the Sportsmanship team. The NAC Men's Cross Country Sportsmanship Team is reserved for those who have distinguished themselves through demonstrated acts of sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The honorees are individuals who have positively affected the sport culture and environment and whose behavior clearly demonstrates sportsmanship and integrity.

In his ninth season as Head Coach, King was selected by his peers as the 2019 Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year. King's squad placed second overall at the 2019 Championships, including having three runners in the top 15. The Mariners placed three runners on the All-Conference Team (third, 11th, and 15th) and all five runners in the top 23. Earlier this season the Mariners won the UMPI Invitational and the NVU-Lyndon Invitational in back-to-back weeks. In the previous eight seasons at the helm for both the Maine Maritime men's and women's teams, King has coached seven All-Conference runners, 40 NAC All-Academic selections, and one CoSIDA/Capitol One Academic All-American runner. His teams have been recognized for academic excellence by the USTFCAA seven times.
