Over the weekend, a team of students, staff, alumni, and guests participated in the Camden Summer Series Races 3 & 4 as part of the Maine Maritime Summer Sailing Program. The team entered the weekend 3rd overall behind Legacy and Speed Trap. Sailing this weekend were MMA students: Alex Walker, Nerissa Cyr, and Conlon Ranta; MMA alumni: Brittany Bridgham '15; and guests: Thomas Bradley (Legacy, Keith Bradley, '98), Ellis Braga, Stockton Harbor Sailing Center, and Meredith McClusky, Castine Yacht Club. The coaches were Matthew Minson '07, and JM Payne, Sailing Master.
Saturday's race was sailed in a heavy fog alongside the Camden Classic Cup, and the students put all of their seamanship to work to guide the boat around the course, coming in 2nd behind Speed Trap. Race 4 on Sunday began light and shifty, but the team capitalized on variable winds to come in 1st and subsequently clenched the top spot overall in a race series decided by a single point. Camden Race 4 also represents a special milestone for the summer sailors, as it marks their 7th and final qualifier for the Maine State Overall Championship, the Dirigo Bowl, from which the team has been absent since 2008.
Looking forward, the team hopes to refine their skills and Dirigo Bowl standing as they compete in the Stockton Harbor Sailing Center Turtle Head Trot this coming Sunday.
