The 78th Professor Schell Trophy

The 78th Professor Schell Trophy

The MMA sailing team wrapped up their fall season this weekend, attending the Fall Championship, at Dartmouth for the first time since 2008. The eight week fall sailing season culminates each year with the top-18 teams in New England, battling for the chance to take home the Schell Trophy—named after Professor Schell of MIT, the founder of college sailing.

Taking home the victory was the Yale Bulldogs—currently the top sailing program nationally, followed by Dartmouth, and Harvard.

Representing MMA: Mott Blair, Owen White, Ellis Heminway, August Campbell, Tristan Walker. Conditions Saturday on Lake Mascoma ranged from 30 degrees and snowing, to 33 degrees and raining—disheartening conditions for any sport. Sailors braved the cold, and light winds until 6:30pm, de-rigging boats for the day well after dark.

Sunday brought equally light winds, but less rain—and after waiting for the wind to fill, Ellis Heminway & August Campbell were a bright spot on an otherwise cloudy day— finishing 8th, 9th, and 12th in their final three races of the day, beating out some of the reigning conference campions. Mott Blair & Owen White posted high scores of 14th several times over the weekend.

MMA Sailing team will finish practices this week preparing for the Spring season, which starts in March, and consists of mostly team racing regattas.
