Sailors Mott Blair (Baldhead Island, N.C.), Owen White (Falmouth, Maine), Luke Healy (Cleveland, Ohio), August Campbell, Olivia Mitchell (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) & David Estes (Searsport, Maine) represented Maine Maritime Academy at the Harpswell Sound Team Race on Saturday.
This all-freshmen team led the Mariners in the program's first ever team race—sailing against Bowdoin College, Bates College, & Tufts University.
Mariners finished 2/7 on the day, coming in 3rd. Most impressive was watching these sailors improve each race, finishing a few close races against Tufts & Bowdoin, that came down to the last 10 seconds of race.
Team Racing is a unique form of racing that pits three boats from one school against three boats from another, asking sailors to work together to finish in a better overall position than the other team's three boats. This differs from the typical Fleet Race, where 18 boats from 18 different schools are sailing for the highest individual finish possible.
The Mariners head to Massachusetts Maritime next weekend for the opportunity to qualify for the New England Championships which will take place on April 27 & 28.
