Mariners Sailing opened up the Fall season at home and on the road this weekend. Traveling to Yale; Olivia Mitchell, Tristan Walker, Zach West, Courtney King, & Griffen Horne competed in the top-billed regatta for the weekend, sailing against most of New England's top sailors. A windy and wavy day on Saturday meant a big learning curve for the MMA sailors, who had mostly seen light wind and flat water in preseason. Sunday brought more familiar conditions, and lead to several finishes above last place, for the freshman trio: King, West, & Horne.
Sailing at home, in two separate regattas were dinghy sailors Mott Blair, Owen White, Luke Healy, & David Estes, each seeing high finishes of 7th & 8th, in the 20 boat fleet. Similar conditions at home on Saturday meant that many schools finished the day with at least one capsize. Sunday was much lighter wind, and from a more familiar direction for the home team—leading MMA sailors to climb in front of Northeastern & Mass. Maritime to finish 8th in the weekend, completing Maine Maritime's sweep of Mass. Maritime teams.
In the keelboat fleet sailors Thomas Dugan, Corinne Poitras, Cole Cleveland, & Thomas McClellan struggled in the bigger breeze on Saturday, with only one race sailed—on Sunday, they faired much better, with high finishes of 4th place.
Mariners Sailing continues the Fall Season next weekend, at the Hatch Brown Regatta hosted by MIT and Barnett Trophy hosted by Bowdoin College.
