Maine Maritime Academy Sailing saw the second week of action at Bowdoin College and MIT this weekend.
Corinne Poitras, James Bell, Courtney King, Mason Mitchell, and Zach West represented the Mariners at the Barnett Trophy, hosted by Bowdoin College. The veteran skipper Poitras found success in heavier breeze on Saturday, posting high place finishes of third & fifth, in a fleet with multiple all-conference sailors. Freshmen boat West & Bell struggled to begin the day on Saturday, but found a groove in the second half of the day. Sunday brought much lighter and shiftier winds, that favored boats Tufts, Harvard, & Northeastern. MMA boats West/Mitchell & Poitras/King posted high finishes of 12th & fifth, respectively on the day two.
Mott Blair, Owen White, Sam Buchanan, Max Hart, Alex Drago, Trace Johnson, and Ben Jacobs sailed at MIT this weekend, at the Hatch Brown Memorial Trophy, NEISA's top event for the weekend. Unused to flat water and shifty wind, the Mariners struggled on the Charles, a notoriously difficult venue. Blair/White scored high finishes of 6th on day one and 7th on day two.
Mariners Sailing continues next weekend at the Showcase Qualifier, hosted by Connecticut College—a perennial Nationals Preview, with three of the top five nationals teams for 2019 representing at the Fall Showcase—which the qualifier is the direct seed for.
