NEW LONDON, Conn. - Maine Maritime Academy sailing competed in the Showcase Qualifier on Saturday and Sunday, hosted by Connecticut College.
Unseasonably warm and humid weather both days lead to wind delays and light and shifty breeze. Mariners sophomore Mott Blair (Baldhead Island, N.C.) and sophomore Owen White (Falmouth, Maine) found success in these conditions, getting clean starts off the line in most races, and able to lead out, finishing top-six in almost half their races for the weekend. Sophomore Olivia Mitchell (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and sophomore Hannah Chase (Warren, Maine) struggled to find boat speed in the light wind through much of the weekend, but found themselves in the mix through most of the day Saturday.
First-year skipper Thomas McClellan (Camden, Maine) started relief for Mitchell at the end of both days.
Mariners Sailing is in Newport, R.I. next weekend for Sister Ester, hosted by Salve Regina, at 10:30 am on Saturday and 9:30 am on Sunday.
