NEWPORT, R.I. – Maine Maritime Academy sailing competed at the Sister Esther Regatta, hosted by Salve Regina University, on Saturday and Sunday.
Newport provided picturesque and quintessential conditions for the two-day event and made for a fantastic weekend of sailing. Windier conditions on Saturday proved tricky in unfamiliar boats, leading to several capsizes, and while multiple teams withdrew from racing for the day. Mariners John Egger (Marion, Mass.), David Estes (Searsport, Maine), Sean Caulfield (San Diego, Cali.), Tristan Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Mason Mitchell (Eagle, Colo.) prevailed in subpar conditions.
Sunday brought a lighter, but from opposite direction as day one, giving sailors an entire new game plan to figure out. The more stable conditions on Sunday were more favorable for Caulfield and Walker, who scored high finishes of 5th and 8th place in the 20-boat fleet.
Mariners sailing continues their fall season next weekend at the Hewitt Trophy on Saturday, Octber 5th and Sunday October 6th, hosted by Dartmouth College, and at the Protest Trophy on Sunday, October 6th, hosted by Bates College.
