Maine Maritime Academy sailing travelled to the US Naval Academy and the University of New Hampshire this weekend to compete in the McMillan Cup and the Peak Foliage Regatta.
Keelboat sailors Conlon Ranta, Elijah Gass, Cole Cleveland, Thomas McClellan, Corinne Poitras, Sean Caulfield, Natalie Samuels, and Tristan Walker traveled to Annapolis, Md. to represent the Mariners at the McMillan Cup, a qualifier for College Sailing's Keelboat Championship, the Kennedy Cup. Light conditions met the Mariners on Saturday, and despite better boatspeed than the rest of the 10-boat fleet by leading top three through parts of the course, struggles with starting and downwind spinnaker work kept the Mariners out of the top five finishing. Conditions Sunday were much more typical of mid-Atlantic fall, with winds gusting 20-25knts, and several inches of rain. Downwind struggles continued in these conditions, leaving the Mariners 10th overall.
Mariners Dinghy sailors traveled to the University of New Hampshire on Sunday to compete in the Peak Foliage Regatta. Poor wind conditions led to the races not being competed and the event being cancelled.
The Mariners sailing wraps up the fall season next weekend, Saturday, October 26, and Sunday October 27, when they travel to compete in the New England Dinghy Tournament, hosted by Boston University.
