STANDISH, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball suffered their first loss of the season to #12/#16 Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 79-58, on Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Harold Alfond Center.
How it Happened: The Mariners hung with the Monks early in the first quarter, but the hosts used a 10-1 run to close out the quarter and took a 24-11 lead into the second quarter.
Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) hit back-to-back threes to cut the Monks' lead to 28-21 with 6:47 to play in the half, but the Monks took a 41-27 lead into halftime and hung on for the win.
Inside the Numbers: Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the Mariners with 16 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block, while Ogden finished the evening with 13 points, two rebounds, and two assists. Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) led the Mariners with four assists, while also chipping in with four points, four rebounds and a steal.
Julia Champagne and Kelsi McNamara led the Monks with 21 points each. Champagne added six rebounds and two assists, while McNamara contributed five assists, two rebounds, a steal and a block. Emily Benway added 12 points and four rebounds.
The Mariners shot 37.3 percent from the floor, while the Monks shot 48.2 percent. The Monks held a 43-36 edge in rebounds, but committed more turnovers (12-10).
Up Next: The Mariners fall to 6-1 overall, while the Monks improve to 7-0 on the season. Maine Maritime will face the defending National Champions, Amherst College, on Saturday, December 8 at 12:00 pm.
