BANGOR, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball defeated the third seed, SUNY Canton 55-43 in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Semifinals on Friday evening inside of Newman Gymnasium.
Up Next: With the victory the second-seeded Mariners improve to 19-6 overall and advance to the NAC Championship for the second-straight season, to face the top seed Husson University at 2:00 pm inside of Newman Gymnasium. The Kangaroos conclude their season at 12-14 overall.
How it Happened: The two teams battled closely in the first quarter until the Mariners scored six-unanswered points to take a 14-11 advantage into the second quarter. Maine Maritime held the Kangaroos to just nine points in the second quarter to take a 27-20 lead into halftime.
The Mariners picked up where they left off in the third quarter, holding the Kangaroos to eight points, taking a double-digit lead (42-28) lead into the final quarter. Canton outscored the Mariners 15-13 in the final 10 minutes, but the Mariners secured the 55-43 victory.
Inside the Numbers: Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) led the Mariners with a game-high 15 points, on all three-pointers, four rebounds, and an assist.
Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) contributed 13 points each, Felix added three rebounds and two assists, while McLean chipped in with five assists, two rebounds and a steal.
Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, to go along with five assists, three blocks and a steal.
Antanasia Chambers led the Roos with 11 points, five steals, four rebounds and two assists.
The Mariners shot 38.5 percent from the floor, while Canton shot 28.6 percent. Maine Maritime held a 38-31 edge in rebounds.
