NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball cruised to an 80-47 victory over Rivier University on Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Tyler Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Smith College.
How it Happened: Maine Maritime jumped out to a 6-0 lead, highlighted by four points from Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine), and maintained a lead throughout the entire first quarter, taking a 23-15 advantage into the second.
After four scoreless minutes to open the second quarter, the Raiders used a six-point run to close the Mariners' lead to 23-21 at 3:21 and outscored Maine Maritime 16-7 overall in the quarter to take a 31-30 lead into halftime.
The Mariners put together an 18-5 point run to build a double-digit lead and never looked back, holding the Raiders to single digits in both the third and fourth quarters, en route to the victory.
Inside the Numbers: Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) led the Mariners with 16 points, while also adding six rebounds and two assists, Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) recorded 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals and Sydney Underhill-Tilton (Richmond, Maine) pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds, while also contributing six points and two assists. Samantha Mason (Lamoine, Maine) chipped in with nine points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal and Charters led the team with six assists, and added six points and six rebounds.
Arianna Motivala tallied a game-high 21 points to go with five rebounds to lead Rivier.
The Mariners shot 42.1 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from three-point land, while the Raiders shot 28.3 percent on the day and 21.1 percent beyond the arc. Maine Maritime held a dominating 55-24 advantage in rebounds.
Up Next: With the win the Mariners improve to 1-3 on the season, while the Raiders dip to 1-4 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action on Tuesday night when they host Colby College for their home opener at 7:00 pm.
