Mariners Win Home Opener

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball picked up a 67-62 victory over Colby College on Tuesday night in non-conference action inside of Smith Gymnasium.

How it Happened: The Mariners jumped out to a five-point lead (12-7) midway through the opening quarter, but the Mules battled back to close Maine Maritime's lead to 17-15 entering the second.

The Mariners scored eight-unanswered points to open up the second quarter, building a 25-15 lead with 6:13 to go and entered halftime with a 36-27 advantage.

Colby outscored the Mariners 15-8 in the third quarter to close the gap to 44-42. The Mules came within one point on three different occasions in the fourth quarter, but the Mariners used a six-point run to take a 66-60 lead with 20 seconds remaining and held on for their fourth-straight win against the Mules.

Inside the Numbers: Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) led the Mariners with 23 points and also added three rebounds, two steals and a block and Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) added 15 points, including 10 points in the fourth quarter, four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Maureen Stanton (Abington, Mass.) contributed a game-high five assists, to go with six points, while Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) and Sydney Underhill-Tilton (Richmond, Maine) each chipped in with six rebounds, and added seven and six points respectively.

Alisha Aube led the Mules with 20 points and six rebounds, Ainsley Burns recorded 18 points, five rebounds and an assist, while Brooke Guiffre tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Mariners shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 53.3 percent from beyond the arc, while the Mules shot 28.4 percent overall and 21.4 percent from three-point land. Colby held a 49-32 edge in rebounds.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 2-3 overall, while the Mules fall to 1-2 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action on Friday night at 7:00 pm, when they travel to take on Gordon College in the first day of the Gordon Classic.
