Plissey Powers Mariners Over Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) tallied a career-high 22 points, including 17 points in the second half, to lead Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball to a 52-50 victory over Gordon College on Friday night in non-conference action inside of the Bennett Center.

How it Happened: The Fighting Scots held the Mariners scoreless for the first seven minutes of play, while building a 10-0 lead and took a 20-5 lead into the second quarter. Maine Maritime came out strong in the second quarter, outscoring Gordon 18-7 to enter halftime down by just four points (27-23).

Plissey gave the Mariners their first lead of the game with 7:02 left in the third, but Gordon held a narrow 39-38 advantage after three quarters.

The two teams exchanged the lead back and forth in the fourth quarter, until Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) splashed a three to put the Mariners up 51-50 with 36 seconds to play. Plissey pulled down a crucial defensive rebound, and a free throw from Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) extended the Mariners' lead to 52-50 with 16 seconds to go. Plissey recorded her fifth block of the game as time expired to seal the victory for Maine Maritime.

Inside the Numbers: Plissey ended the evening with a double-double of 22 points, shooting 10-of-13 from the floor, and 11 rebounds, to go with five blocks. Ogden recorded 10 points, three rebounds and a block, Maddy Candage (Bar Harbor, Maine) pulled down nine rebounds, and added four points and three assists, and Maureen Stanton (Abington, Mass.) led all players with five assists, and added four rebounds and three points.

Meghan Foley led Gordon with a double-double of her own of 22 points and 10 rebounds, while also tallying an assist and a steal. Olivia Gagnon chipped in with 12 points, three assists, two steals and a rebound and Sarah Gibbs pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.

Maine Maritime shot 30.2 percent from the floor and 29.4 percent from beyond the arc, while Gordon shot 26.6 percent overall and 17.4 percent from three-point land. The Mariners held a 46-44 edge in rebounds.

Up Next: The Mariners improve to 3-3 on the season, while Gordon drops to 3-1 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, November 23 when they face New England College at 1:00 pm inside of the Bennett Center in the final day of the Gordon Classic
