Wildcats Edge Mariners in Season Opener

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to Wheelock College 10-8, in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.

The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 1-0. Maine Maritime returns to action next Friday, March 9 at SUNY Maritime for the Fourth Annual Maritime Classic.

The Mariners got on the board first when Madison Savary (Bath, Maine) found the back of the net at 29:15. The Wildcats answered back two minutes later when Colleen Macdonald added her first goal of the game to tie it at 1-1. Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) picked up her first goal of the season at 26:10 to give the Mariners a 2-1 advantage, but Wheelock used a three-goal run to take a 4-2 edge into halftime.

Savary tallied her second goal of the game just seconds into the second half, but the Wildcats orchestrated another three-goal run to stretch their lead to 7-3.

Maine Maritime's Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) took advantage of a Wheelock yellow card and tallied a goal at 17:40 and Barry added her second goal of the game at 15:39 to cut the deficit to 7-5. Macdonald tallied her fourth goal of the game at 13:50 to give the Wildcats a two-goal advantage, but Adams added two goals in a row to make it 8-7 with 6:23 to play.

Wheelock scored back-to-back goals to take a 10-7 lead at 2:37 and despite a last-minute goal from Savary, the Mariners fell 10-8.

Adams and Savary both net hat tricks to lead the Mariners, while Savary also dished out two assists and Adams led the team with three caused turnovers. Barry added two goals and an assist, Morgan Libby (Brunswick, Maine) led the Mariners with four ground balls and Shelby O'Neil (Bar Harbor, Maine) added a team-best 10 draw controls.

Macdonald led all players with six goals while teammate Georgia Schindele added a hat trick. Katie Frade led the Wildcats with 10 ground balls and four caused turnovers and Alexandra Clark led the team with five draw controls.

Maine Maritime's Christina Wilson (East Grandby, Conn.) stopped 14 shots in net in the loss, while Wheelock's Erin Sior stopped 10 shots in the victory.
