BANGOR, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to Husson University 15-8, on Friday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Quarterfinal matchup at Boucher Field.
With the loss the Mariners conclude the 2018 season at 6-6 overall, while the Eagles improve to 6-7 on the season and will take on the top-seeded Castleton University on Sunday, April 29 in the NAC Semifinals.
The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Mariners found the back of the net on a free position goal from Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) at 18:38. The two teams exchanged goals, before the Eagles scored back-to-back goals to take an 8-2 lead. Adams added her second goal of the game at 4:11 and Shelby O'Neil (Bar Harbor, Maine) tallied a goal to cut the Husson lead to 8-4. The Eagles added one more goal, late in the first half to take a 9-4 lead into halftime.
Adams opened up the scoring in the second half, but the Eagles scored four-unanswered goals to build a 13-5 lead and despite three late-game goals, Husson claimed the 15-8 victory.
Adams led the Mariners with four goals, six draw controls and three ground balls, while O'Neil ended the afternoon with two goals, three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover and Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) added a goal and an assist. Olivia Le Blanc (Conifer, Colo.) tallied the other goal for the Mariners to go with two ground balls, and Sierra James (Campton, N.H.) led the Mariners defensively with six ground balls and two caused turnovers while stopping 12 shots in net.
Amanda Deshaies led the Eagles with six goals, three assists, six draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Cali Newton added a hat trick, one assist and a ground balls and both Paige Daigle and Jordyn Labrie tallied two goals. Mallory Burchill earned the victory in net with nine saves and three ground balls.
The Eagles edged the Mariners in ground balls, 28-23 and draw controls 15-12.
