Women's Lacrosse Stumbles in Home and NAC Opener

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to SUNY Canton, 19-5 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.

How it Happened: The Roos jumped out to a 7-0 lead, before Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) added an unassisted goal for the Mariners at 13:11. Canton scored four in a row to take an 11-1 lead. Olivia Le Blanc (Conifer, Colo.) added her second goal of the season to cut the lead to 11-2 but the Roos added four more before halftime, to take a 15-2 lead.

The Mariners held Canton to just four goals in the second half, while tallying three goals of their own, but the visitors came away with the 19-5 victory. 

Inside the Numbers: Adams led the Mariners with two goals, three ground balls, five draw controls and a caused turnover. Madison Savary (Bath, Maine) added a goal, an assist and a ground ball, while Le Blanc and Sierra James (Campton, N.H.) added the other goals for the Mariners.

Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) led the Mariners with four caused turnovers, and Sydney Cole (Westbrook, Maine) tallied six saves in net.

Molly Denny and Logan Bush led Canton with four goals each, while Erin Parks added three goals. Mia Jermano led the team with five ground balls and three caused turnovers and Jessica Pele added a team-high five draw controls. In net, Madison Leary tallied two saves in the victory.

Canton edged the Mariners in ground balls 24-20 and draw controls 14-11. 

Up Next: The Mariners fall to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the NAC, while the Kangaroos improve to 5-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on tomorrow, Sunday, March 24 when they host NVU- Lyndon at 12:00 pm for a non-conference matchup.
