WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy secured a 1-0 victory over University of Maine-Presque Isle on Friday evening in the opening day of the Terrier Women's Soccer Classic hosted by Thomas College.
The opening half saw both teams go back and forth, with the majority of the play in the middle of the pitch. The Mariners nearly took the lead at the 26th minute when Morgan Libby took a header just wide of the goal off a corner kick.

At 64:09 the Mariners had an opportunity to take the lead on a penalty kick by Victoria Cooper, but the shot sailed just high and hit the cross bar.
The Mariners were able to finally find the back of the twine when Obshatkin placed a corner kick just inside the near post, while Libby jumped over the crowd inside the box and headed the sphere in the net for the eventual game-winning goal.
Kelsie Hilton made four saves in the victory, while Allison Lopez recorded 11 saves in the losing effort.
Overall, Maine Maritime outshot the Owls 27-7, while holding a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow to wrap up the classic, as UMPI takes on the host Terriers, while Maine Maritime will play University of Southern Maine at 1:30 pm. Please note the start of the game has been moved up due to weather.
