CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer cruised to a 5-0 win over Unity College in their season opener on Friday afternoon at Ritchie Field.
Junior Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va.) picked up where she left off last season, putting the Mariners on the board just 50 seconds into the game.
Sophomore Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) added a goal in the 20th minute to double Maine Maritime's lead to 2-0, and Lewis added her second goal of the game in the 33rd minute. Sophomore Kelsea Anair (Dresden, Maine) added a goal in the 44th minute to send the Mariners into halftime with a 4-0 lead.
Early in the second half, Senior Eleanor Carr (Bucksport, Maine) placed a ball ahead to Lewis, who found the back of the net for her third goal of the game, and third career hat trick.
The Mariners dominated possession of the ball and outshot the Rams 57-0. Making her collegiate debut, Maine Maritime's goalie Emily Conway (Charleston, S.C.) earned the victory in net, while Unity's Sarah Cantwell collected 23 saves in net, in the loss.
Maine Maritime improves to 1-0 this season, while the Rams fall to 0-1. The Mariners host Gordon College tomorrow, Saturday, September 2 at 1:30 pm on Ritchie Field.
