CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer fell to non-conference opponent Bates College on Tuesday night, 3-1 on Ritchie Field.
Olivia Amdur put the Bobcats on the board in the 27th minute, when she brought the ball up from near midfield and beat Mariner keeper Emily Conway (Charleston, S.C.) to make it 1-0. In the 39th minute Amdur added her second goal of the game to send Bates into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
Sarah DiPillo added the third goal for Bates in the 49th minute when teammate Nellie Breen intercepted a pass from a defender and fed the ball into the box.
The Mariners had one of their better scoring chances minutes later when Susana DeFrank (Temecula, Calif.) dribbled the ball into Bobcat territory, taking her defender one-on-one for twenty yards, but Bates' goalie Sarah McCarthy came up the make a play and cut off the angle before DeFrank could take a shot.
Maine Maritime broke up the shutout in the 88th minute, when Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va.) lobbed a ball that ricocheted off of a Bates defender and found Emily Wyman (Brockton, Mass.) who booted the ball into net past McCarthy to make it 3-1.
Conway ended the evening with eight saves in the loss for the Mariners, while McCarthy picked up the win in net for Bates.
The Mariners fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Bobcats improve to 1-0 overall. Maine Maritime hits the road for a pair of non-conference games, taking on Smith College on Saturday at 2:00 pm and Westfield State on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
