POULTNEY, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer shutout Green Mountain College, 5-0 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Sunday afternoon to secure the fifth seed in the upcoming NAC Tournament.
Susana DeFrank (Temecula, Calif.) put the Mariners on the board in the fifth minute and Emily Wyman (Brockton, Mass.) scored two in a row to give the Mariners a 3-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of play. Allison Boulier (Bangor, Maine) added a goal in the 19th minute to send the Mariners into halftime with a 4-0 advantage and Miranda McIntire (Alna, Maine) closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute to give the Mariners the 5-0 victory with her first career goal.
Maine Maritime's Emily Conway (Charleston, S.C) turned away the only shot she faced in net for the victory, while Jessica Casey tallied 12 saves in net for the Eagles.
With the win the Mariners conclude the regular season with a 7-10 record overall and a 5-4 record in conference play to clinch the number five seed in the NAC Tournament. Maine Maritime will travel to fourth seeded Husson on Saturday, October 28.
Colby-Sawyer has claimed the top seed for the 2017 NAC Women's Soccer Championship, which begins with quarterfinal matchups on campus sites Saturday, October 28.
The Chargers (12-2-1 overall) secured the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament after compiling a flawless 9-0 record in NAC play and will earn a bye in Saturday's quarterfinal round. Second-seeded Castleton (9-7-1 overall, 8-1 NAC) will also earn a bye in the quarterfinals..
New England College (7-8-2, 6-2-1) claimed the No. 3 seed, while Husson (7-6-1, 6-2-1), Maine Maritime (7-10, 5-4), and UMaine-Farmington (7-10, 4-5) earned the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 seeds respectively to complete the six-team tournament field.
Two quarterfinal contests will be played on Saturday, as No. 3 NEC will host No. 6 UMF and No. 5 Maine Maritime will travel to No. 4 Husson. Both game times are to be determined.
Quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinal round which will be played on Tuesday, October 31. Top-seeded Colby-Sawyer will host the winner of the Husson/Maine Maritime quarterfinal, while No. 2 Castleton will host the winner of the NEC/UMF quarterfinal contest. Semifinal game times are to be determined.
Semifinal winners will square off for the conference championship on Saturday, November 4, at a time to be determined at the site of the higher seed.
The NAC Champion will receive an automatic berth to the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship.
