BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer cruised to a 6-1 victory over Massachusetts Maritime on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Clean Harbors Stadium.
The Mariners improve to 2-1 with the victory while the Buccaneers fall to 0-1. Maine Maritime will take on Nichols College tomorrow at 12:00 pm in a non-conference matchup.
The Buccaneers got on the board quickly in the second minute when Shannon Elwood grabbed an unassisted goal, but the rest of the game was all Mariners.
Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va.) added her first goal of the game in the 10th minute on a breakaway and Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) added back-to-back goals, first in the 26th minute and again in the 45th minute on a corner kick from Lewis, to send the Mariners into halftime with a 3-1 advantage.
Lewis opened up the scoring in the second half, when she sank a one-timer in net past Buccaneer keeper, Mikayla Houlihan in the 62nd minute and secured the hat trick in the 75th minute. Jillian Holden (Madison, Maine) picked up her first career goal to round out the scoring for the Mariners in the 76th minute.
The Mariners dominated shots, 26-5 and corner kicks, 6-1.
Alice Van Kovn (Lancaster, Calif.) earned the victory in net for the Mariners, while Houlihan stopped seven shots in the loss for Mass. Maritime.
