Mariners and Huskies Fight to 1-1 Draw

GORHAM, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer battled to a 1-1 draw with the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday night in non-conference action at Hannaford Field.

The Mariners are now to 10-2-1 on the season, while the Huskies are now 11-3-1 overall. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, October 20 when they host NVU-Johnson for Senior Day at 4:00 pm.

Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va.) put the Mariners on the board in the 10th minute, with her 10th goal of the season, following a perfectly placed corner kick from Susana DeFrank (Temecula, Calif.).

Emma Dennison added the equalizer for the Huskies in the 23rd minute, on a pass from teammate Alexandria Allain and the two teams entered halftime deadlocked at 1-1.

Both team's goalies came up big late in regulation and in overtime to preserve the tie. Maine Maritime's Emily Conway (Charleston, S.C.) made a diving save in the 99th minute on a hard shot from Ciera Berthiaume and Huskies' keeper Tayler Canastra punched away a try from Lewis in the 110th minute.

Conway ended the evening with five saves, while Canastra turned away four shots.

The Huskies held a 16-7 advantage in shots, but the Mariners held a 7-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.
