CASTINE, Maine -- Maine Maritime Academy Women's Soccer is proud to announce the first five signees for the 2019 recruiting class.
The signees are: Suzanne Wooldridge (Los Angeles, Calif.), Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine), Kelsey Bern (Castle Rock, Wash.), Brigette Olearcek (Little Cranberry Island, Maine), and Laura Blue (Brisbane, Queensland, Australia).
"This class is very important to our success on the field," said Maine Maritime Academy Head Women's Soccer Coach Seth Brown. "It was vital that we gained players who could step right on the field and contribute immediately. Knowing the strength of our returners and the potential of this group we are excited for the 2019 season to kick off. The 2018 season was full of program firsts, however, we are still chasing a NAC championship and feel this group of new players will help us grow and find our way to the NAC championship. We are excited about welcoming them into the MMA women's soccer and Mariners family. The coaching staff has enjoyed getting to know these players during the recruiting process and can't wait to get to work in August."
Suzanne Wooldridge #15 | D | Los Angeles, Calif. | Scarborough High School | Seacoast United Maine
"Suz was our first commitment in this class and I know we are as excited as she is to get on campus," said Brown. "We were looking to add a defender that we could pair with Lauren Wood (Vassalboro, Maine) on the outside of our defense and Suz should step in immediately and fill that role."
Kelsey Bern #10 | Castle Rock, Wash. | Robert A. Long High School | Pacific FC
"We are graduating a large percentage of our goals scored from 2018 so the addition of Kelsey is going to ease the load of our returning players," Brown said. "She is fast, she is strong and she is going to score quite a few goals in her four years in Castine."
Laura Blue #13 | F | Brisbane, Australia | Annerley FC
"We set a number of program records for scoring in 2018," said Brown. "Laura's knack for scoring goals and finding teammates is going to put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses and allow us to set our sights on breaking the record again in 2019."
Brigette Olearcek #14 | M | Little Cranberry Island, Maine | Mount Desert Island High School
"Brig is a player that will thrive in the environment here at MMA," said Brown. "She is someone that will have the ability to come in right away and contribute while continuing to develop as a player for our program. She may have flown under the radar a bit but she fits into our team's vision."
Beth Labbe #0 | GK | Brunswick, Maine | Brunswick High School | Brunswick Travel
"Beth is a goalkeeper that our assistant coach, Zach has been after for this class," said Brown. "Though not a finished product, she possesses a tenacity in goal and offers a skill set that complements what we currently have. Being able to add another goalkeeper to the roster, and someone that is going to push Emily Conway (Charleston, S.C.) and Amber Durant (Mansfield, Mass.), is huge moving forward."
