CASTINE, Maine – Senior Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine) tied the Mariners' single-game record with four goals, to lead Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer to a 5-0 shutout over Massachusetts Maritime, in the opening game of the 2019 Maritime Cup, on Friday night at Ritchie Field.
With the win the Mariners improve to 1-2 overall and the Buccaneers fall to 0-1 with the loss. Maine Maritime returns to action on Sunday, when they host SUNY Maritime in the final day of the Maritime Cup at 10:00 am.
Freshman Laura Blue (Brisbane, Australia) scored her first career goal in the 28th minute on a pass from teammate Kelsey Bern (Castle Rock, Wash.) and Doiron scored her first goal of the game just minutes later to send the Mariners into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The second half was all Doiron as she net three goals to lead the Mariners to the victory.
Emily Conway (Charleston, S.C.) earned the win in net for the Mariners stopping all three shots she faced in the first half, while Bess MacArthur (Castine, Maine) tallied two stops in nearly 29 minutes of play and Beth Labbe (Brunswick, Maine) made her collegiate debut in net for the Mariners, going untested in just under 17 minutes.
Mass. Maritime's Paige Albertson stopped six shots in net, in the loss.
The Mariners outshot the Buccaneers 24-7 and took four corner kicks, while the Bucs took none.
