CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's soccer fell to the University of Southern Maine 2-1 on Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup at Ritchie Field.
With the loss, the Mariners fall to 9-4-0 overall, while the Huskies improve to 7-9-1 overall on the season.
Prior to the game the Mariners honored their senior players: Eryn Doiron (Wilton, Maine), Kelsea Anair (Richmond, Maine), Lilah Chaar (Stockton Springs, Maine), Caitlin Paradis (Ashland, Maine), and Kaitlyn Shute (Searsport, Maine).
Southern Maine got on the board early when Alex Allain beat Emily Conway (Charleston, S.C.) in the 7th minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead, which would hold until halftime. The Mariners were outshot 15-2 in the first half by the Huskies.
Anair put the Mariners on the board in the 63rd minute, when she took advantage of misplayed ball and put it over Southern Maine's Kayla Gorman's head from 30 yards out, tying the game up at 1-1. Ciera Berthiaume scored on a breakaway minutes later, making it 2-1 Southern Maine in the 68th minute.
Conway made nine saves in the loss for the Mariners, while Gorman made four saves in the win for the Huskies.
The Mariners return to action on Saturday, October 26, when they travel to take on the University of Maine at Presque Isle in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup at 3:30 PM.
