WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Friday night 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-10), in non-conference action.
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the Mariners picked up a 25-13 victory in the first set, led by four aces from Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.). In the second set, the Mariners took the set 25-16, led by three aces from Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico). The Mariners secured the three-set victory with a commanding 25-10 win in the final set.
Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) led the Mariners with 12 kills, three digs, two blocks and an ace. Cacacie also tallied a career-best .571 hitting percentage (12 kills, 0 errors, 21 total attacks). Maggie MacMahon (Boise, Idaho) tallied 11 kills and four digs and Maryellyn Musselman (West Friendship, Md.) contributed nine kills, a dig and a block, while hitting .667 (9 kills, 1 error, 12 total attacks). Perez ended the evening with 10 digs, three aces and two assists, while D'Auria chipped in with 10 digs, six aces, five kills, and two blocks. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led all players with 37 assists, and added two aces, two digs and a kill.
Jasmine Buckley led the Blue Jays with four kills, while teammate Janell Molina added a match-high 18 digs and Brenna Miller chipped in with a team-leading 11 assists.
The Mariners improve to 9-5 overall, while the Blue Jays fall to 3-7 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Trinity College to take on the Bantams at 10:00 am, and Mount Saint Mary College at 12:00 pm.
