Volleyball Sweeps NEC and Colby-Sawyer to Secure No. 1 Seed in NAC Tournament

BANGOR, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated New England College 3-0 and Colby-Sawyer College 3-1 on Saturday at Husson University in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play to secure the No. 1 seed in the NAC Volleyball Tournament.

Maine Maritime Academy 3 – New England College 0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-16)

Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Mariners with a double-double of 24 assists and 10 digs, while also adding three kills, an ace and a block. Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Mariners with nine kills, while also adding nine digs, two aces and an assist and Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with 21 digs. Hannah Butland (Cumberland, Maine) added 12 digs, five aces, four kills, and a block.

Kaitlyn Walker led the Pilgrims with four kills, Meghan Six led the team with 13 digs, and Kennedy Somavia tallied eight assists.

Maine Maritime Academy 3 – Colby-Sawyer College 1 (25-15, 14-25, 25-14, 25-18) 

In a rematch of the 2016 NAC Championship match, the Mariners came away with the victory once again.

Jessica D'Auria led the Mariners with a double-double of 14 digs and 13 kills, while also contributing three aces and an assist. Sydney Adams tallied a double-double of her own with a match-high 30 assists, and 11 digs, while also tallying six kills and an ace. Maria Perez led all players with 22 digs, and also added four assists and an ace.

Maggie MacMahon (Boise, Idaho) added eight kills and five digs while Hannah Butland added eight digs, seven kills, four blocks, two assist and two aces.

Naarah Cox led the Chargers with nine kills, Morgan Flynn chipped in with 14 digs and Olivia Goodrich led the team with 24 assists. 

With the victories, Maine Maritime earned the No. 1 seed for the 2017 NAC Volleyball Championship Tournament, which begins with quarterfinal matchups on campus sites Saturday, October 28. 

The Mariners (18-9 overall) claimed the top seed in the conference tournament after posting an unblemished 7-0 record in NAC play and will earn a bye in Saturday's quarterfinal round. Second-seeded Husson (16-10 overall, 6-1 NAC) will also earn a bye in the quarterfinals.

Colby-Sawyer (11-18, 5-2) claimed the No. 3 seed, while New England College (12-15, 4-3), Castleton (7-14, 3-4), and Green Mountain (5-14, 2-5) earned the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 seeds respectively to complete the six-team tournament field.

Two quarterfinal contests will be played on Saturday, as No. 3 Colby-Sawyer will host No. 6 Green Mountain and No. 4 NEC will host No. 5 Castleton. Both match times are to be determined. 

Quarterfinal winners will advance to the semifinal round which will be played on Friday, November 3, at Maine Maritime. The top-seeded Mariners will play the winner of the NEC/Castleton quarterfinal contest at 6:00 p.m., while No. 2 Husson will take on the winner of the Colby-Sawyer/Green Mountain quarterfinal at 8:00 p.m. 

Semifinal winners will square off for the conference championship on Saturday, November 4, at a time to be determined.

The NAC Champion will receive an automatic berth to the 2017 NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship.

Before hosting the NAC Tournament, the Mariners will host UMaine-Fort Kent tomorrow, Sunday, October 22 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
