Season Preview: Volleyball

Looking Ahead to the 2017 Season: The Maine Maritime Academy volleyball team looks to defend their 2016 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship. The Mariners return 2016 NAC Defensive Player of the Year, Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and 2016 NAC Rookie of the Year Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.).

"We are excited for another season with the opportunity to play against one of the toughest schedules Maine Maritime Academy volleyball has seen in years," said Maine Maritime Academy Head Volleyball Coach and 2016 NAC Volleyball Coach of the Year Tricia Carver.

Season Opener: The Mariners open up their 2017 season on Friday when they play the University of New England at 8:00 pm, at the University of Southern Maine. Maine Maritime takes on Southern Maine on Saturday morning at 10:00 am and Saint Joseph's College of Maine at 12:00 pm.

The Mariners are 1-5 all-time against the University of New England, including a 1-1 record when playing at a neutral site. Last season the Mariners fell 3-2 to UNE. 

The Mariners are 6-6 all-time against Southern Maine, including a 1-2 record when playing at USM. Last season the Mariners defeated the Huskies 3-1 in Biddeford, Maine. 

The Mariners are 5-11 all-time against Saint Joseph's, including a 0-2 record when playing at a neutral site, Last season the Mariners defeated the Monks 3-0 for their first victory over the non-conference opponent since 2011.

Conference Play: The Mariners open up NAC play on Saturday, September 30 when they take on Lyndon State College and Johnson State College. 

NAC Preseason Poll: Maine Maritime Academy was selected to repeat as the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) volleyball champions in the 2017 preseason poll. The Mariners received a total of 59 points and six of the eight first place votes to top the league.

"It's going to be a year full of challenges and opportunities but I am confident that we will rise to the level of competition ahead of us and have a blast playing the sport that we love," said Carver. "I love my team!"

Colby-Sawyer College was slated second with 52 points and one first-place vote, while Husson University was voted third with 46 points and Lyndon State College and New England College tied for fourth with 32 points apiece, as the Hornets claimed the remaining first-place vote.

Rounding out the poll were Castleton University in sixth with 29 points, Johnson State College took seventh with 23 points, and Green Mountain College earned eighth with 15 points.

Voting for the preseason poll was conducted among the league's head volleyball coaches.

Looking Back at 2016: The Mariners went 22-9 overall last season and a perfect 7-0 in NAC play to claim the 2016 NAC Championship. With the win, Maine Maritime advanced into the NCAA Division III Tournament, facing Tufts. The Mariners fell 3-0 to Tufts ending their NCAA run.
