Volleyball Opens up 2018 with Win Over Southern Maine

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy defeated the University of Southern Maine 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-20) on Friday night in the season opener for both teams inside of Smith Gymnasium.

With the victory the Mariners open up the 2018 season 1-0, while the Huskies drop to 0-1. Maine Maritime will take on University of New England tomorrow at 2:00 pm, before taking on Saint Joseph's College of Maine at 4:00 pm.

The two teams exchange points back-and-forth in the first set until the Mariners went on a late run and took the 25-17 decision. The second set was all Maine Maritime, as the team put together nine-straight points midway through the set to pick up a commanding 25-9 victory to lead the match 2-0. The third set mirrored the first, but the Mariners came away with a 25-20 victory to claim their first win over Southern Maine since 2016.

Freshman Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) made her presence known in her first collegiate start, leading the Mariners with a double-double of 11 kills and 11 digs, and also contributed two aces and a pair of blocks. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led all players with 27 assists and also chipped in with four digs, three kills, two aces and a block. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) added a match-high 15 digs, while also tallying a kill, an assist and an ace. 

Kylee Austin led the Huskies with five kills, three blocks and a dig, while teammate Nicole Schmitz added a team-high 11 assists to go along with three digs, two kills and one assist. Kacey Foerster led Southern Maine with five digs while also chipping in with three blocks and two kills.
