Volleyball's Strong Start Falls Short Against Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball fell to Colby College, 3-1 (17-25, 25-15, 25-12, 29-27), on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Wadsworth Gym.

The Mariners fall to 3-1 on the season, while the Mules improve to 1-0. Maine Maritime hits the road to take on Western Connecticut State and Coast Guard Academy on Friday night, beginning at 6:00 pm.

Maine Maritime fought back from a 5-0 deficit in the first set to claim a 25-17 victory, but the Mules won set two, 25-15. The Mules used a 10-point run in the third set to claim a 25-12 victory and hung on to edge the Mariners 29-27 in the fourth set for the match win.

Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Mariners with eight kills, eight digs, four aces and a block, while Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with 26 digs, and chipped in with three assists and a kill. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Mariners with 22 assists, and also contributed seven digs, six kills and two blocks.

Paige Hanssen led the Mules with 14 kills, five digs, one assist and an ace, while teammate Julie Hutchings contributed 12 kills, four digs, three aces and a block. Erin Maidman led Colby with 25 digs and Molly Manuel led the team with 22 assists.
