BRUNSWICK, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball fell to Bowdoin College, 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-23) on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Morrell Gymnasium.
The Mariners fall to 5-4 on the season, while the Polar Bears improve to 6-0. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, September 15 at Southern Maine, where they will take on UMass.-Dartmouth at 2:00 pm and the Huskies at 4:00 pm.
The Polar Bears scored first in the first set, but the Mariners maintained a slight lead until Bowdoin tied things up at 13-13. The teams exchanged points back-and-forth but the Mariners went on a 5-1 run to take a 19-16 lead. The Polar Bears hung on for the victory, outscoring the Mariners 4-1 in the final five points.
Bowdoin got on the board first in the second set and never looked back, using a five-point run to close out the set with a 25-12 victory.
The Mariners used a seven-point run to fight back from an 18-12 deficit midway through the third set, led by two aces from Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.). Despite the Mariners' surge, the Polar Bears battled back and claimed the match with the 25-23 third set win.
Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) led the Mariners with eight kills, seven digs, five assists and an ace, Cacacie finished the evening with seven kills, three digs, three aces, an assist and a block and Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied a double-double with a team-high 16 assists and 10 digs, while also recording four kills, an ace and a block.
Sophia Pahl led Bowdoin with eight kills, Lisa Sheldon tallied a match-high 17 digs, and Kate Kiser led all players with 25 assists.
