GORHAM, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball split a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating UMass Dartmouth 3-1 in the first match of the day, but falling to hosting Southern Maine 3-0 in non-conference action at Hill Gymnasium.
With the victory over UMass Dartmouth, Maine Maritime Academy's Head Coach Tricia Carver has reached 100 career wins.
The Mariners (6-5) will return to action next weekend when they head to SUNY Maritime to take on the Privateers, Merchant Marine and Mass. Maritime in the Ninth Annual Maritime Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 – UMass Dartmouth 1 (24-26, 25-17, 25-13, 25-17)
Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) led the Mariners with 15 kills, and also added three assists, three aces, two digs and a block. Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) recorded 13 kills, six digs, two aces and a block, Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) picked up a team-high 13 digs, while also chipping in with three aces and an assist and Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) had a match-high 34 assists, to go along with eight digs, four kills and a block.
Nicole Silverman led UMass Dartmouth (5-2) with 10 digs, nine kills and two blocks, Jordan Rittberger tallied a team-best 24 assists and Jillian Sykora led all players with 15 digs.
Southern Maine 3 – Maine Maritime Academy 0 (25-23, 30-28, 25-19)
Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and Avery O'Neal led the Mariners with nine kills each, both D'Auria and O'Neal chipped in with eight digs, D'Auria also added a block while O'Neal also contributed an ace and an assist. Sydney Adams led all players with 29 assists, while Maria Perez recorded a match-high 12 digs and Maggie MacMahon (Boise, Idaho) added 11 digs and six kills.
The Huskies (6-4) avenged a season-opening loss to the Mariners behind eight kills from Kacey Foerster, nine digs from Lauren Delissio and 21 assists from Nicole Schmitz.
