BRONX, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated SUNY Maritime, 3-0 and USMMA 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Ninth Annual Maritime Classic hosted by SUNY Maritime College.
With the victories, Maine Maritime Academy improves to 8-5 overall, while SUNY falls to 2-5 and Merchant Marine drops to 3-5. Maine Maritime returns to action tomorrow in the final day of the Maritime Classic, when they take on Massachusetts Maritime at 11:00 am.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 – SUNY Maritime 0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-15)
Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) led Maine Maritime Academy with 11 kills, six digs, and an assist, while Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) chipped in with eight kills, four aces, a dig and a block and Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) contributed seven kills, four digs, and an ace. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led the match with 28 assists, and also added five aces, three kills and three digs.
Abigail Steele led the Privateers with four kills, teammate Celyna Custodio led the team with six digs, and Erika Kirchner contributed a team-high five assists.
Maine Maritime Academy 3 – USMMA 0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-21)
Rachel Melampy led Maine Maritime once again with 12 kills, eight digs, one ace, one block and one assist, while Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) tallied nine digs, two aces and an assist, and Sydney Adams tallied 21 assists, eight digs, five kills and two aces.
Taylor Gilbertson and Kate Lefler led USMMA with nine kills each, Lefler also led the team with seven digs and Brittney Pinzon led the match with 22 assists.
