BRONX, N.Y. – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated Massachusetts Maritime, 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-17) in the final day of the Ninth Annual Maritime Classic, hosted by SUNY Maritime, to clinch the title for the third-straight year.
With the victory, the Mariners improve to 9-5 overall, while the Buccaneers drop to 0-7 on the season. Maine Maritime returns to action on Wednesday, September 26 at Husson University for a non-conference matchup at 7:00 pm.
Maine Maritime used eight-straight points to take a 14-4 lead in the first set and never looked back on their way to a 25-11 victory. Rachel Bunker's (Ellsworth, Maine) serve led the Mariners to 14-consecutive points in the second set and the team took a 25-10 set win. The Buccaneers put together a five-point run to take a brief 8-6 lead in the third set, but the Mariners responded with six-straight points and took a 14-9 advantage. The Mariners began to pull away and took the final set 25-17.
Tournament MVP Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) led the Mariners with 12 kills, hitting .600 percent, one dig and one ace, while All-Tournament selection Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) led all players with 20 assists and also added two digs, a block, and an ace. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led all players with 11 digs and contributed four assists and three aces. Hannah Butland (Cumberland, Maine) chipped in with 13 assists, five digs, four kills and two aces.
Marie Harrison, Jen Roy and Michelle Sheehan led the Buccaneers with two kills each, while Christina Ruggeri led the way with six digs and Madison Coughlin led Mass. Maritime with eight assists.
