LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College defeated Maine Maritime Academy volleyball 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 27-25), on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Alumni Gymnasium, ending the Mariners seven-match win streak.
Maine Maritime falls to 13-6 on the season, while the Bobcats improve to 8-5 overall. The Mariners return to action this Saturday, October 13, when they open up North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play in Vermont against NVU-Lyndon and NVU-Johnson beginning at 10:00 am.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but the Mariners fought back and used a four-point run to tie the set at 9-9. The two teams exchanged the lead back-and-forth until Bates scored two in a row to claim the set 25-23.
Bates took another early 5-1 lead in the second set, and despite the Mariners 6-2 run that closed the gap to 18-16, the Bobcats held on for the 25-19 victory.
The Mariners took a 5-2 lead in the third set, but the two teams battled closely until the Bobcats used a six-point run to take a 14-11 lead. Maine Maritime fought back to tie the set a number of times, but the Bobcats edged the Mariners 27-25 to claim the match.
Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) led all players with 19 kills, and also tallied a team-best seven digs to go along with a block. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) had 33 assists, two aces, two digs, two kills and a block and Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) added seven kills, three digs, two aces and a block.
Taylor Stafford-Smith led Bates with 14 kills, and chipped in with three digs and a block, Ruby Lightbourn added 13 kills, five digs and two aces and Julia Panepinto led all players with 36 assists and contributed five digs. Gabi Eustache led the Bobcats with eight digs.
