CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy volleyball defeated Colby College 3-2 (25-18, 25-18, 20-25, 22-25, 15-12) on Tuesday night in non-conference action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
With the victory the Mariners improve to 18-6 on the season, while the Mules drop to 6-14. Maine Maritime returns to action on Saturday, when they head to Husson to take on UMaine-Presque Isle and UMaine-Fort Kent to wrap up the regular season.
Prior to the match the Mariners honored their senior, Micaela Tanguay (Arundel, Maine).
The Mariners took the first two sets by identical scores of 25-18 but the Mules came back to win the third set 25-20 and the fourth set 25-22. The Mariners responded in the fifth set and took a 15-12 victory.
Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) led all players with 22 kills and added 12 digs for a double-double, and also chipped in with three blocks, and an ace, while Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the Mariners with 13 digs, and added two aces, and two assists. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied a match-high 48 assists to go with 10 digs, four aces, four kills, and a block. Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) contributed 12 kills, five aces and four digs and Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) added 10 digs, three aces and three kills.
Paige Hanssen led the Mules with 13 kills, and added six digs and five blocks, Elizabeth Middlebrook added 11 kills, eight digs, two blocks and an ace, and Erin Maidman led the team with 18 digs and also chipped in with and ace and an assist. Molly Manuel led the Mules with 25 assists, and contributed six digs, an assist, and an ace.
