Mariners Fall to Springfield in First Round of NCAA Tournament

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Springfield College defeated Maine Maritime Academy 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-19) on Friday afternoon in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament hosted by Johnson & Wales University.

The Mariners conclude their season at 22-7 overall, while Springfield improves to 24-7 and will play Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in the second round. Wesleyan defeated Kean, 3-1 to advance. 

The sixth-seeded Mariners traded points with the third-seeded Pride into the middle of the first set, but Springfield pulled away and took a 25-15 victory.

Springfield came out strong in the second set and took a 10-point lead at 17-7. The Mariners fought back but the Pride claimed the set 25-14.

Springfield started the third set with six-unanswered points before Maine Maritime called a timeout to regroup. The Mariners closed the gap to two (15-13) and an ace by Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) closed Springfield's lead to 17-16. Maine Maritime tied the score at 19-19, but the Pride scored six in a row to win the set 25-19, and the match 3-0.

Rachel Melampy (Duxbury, Mass.) led the Mariners with nine kills, three digs, three blocks and one assist. Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) tallied 18 assists, five digs, two kills, one ace, and a block, and Cacacie chipped in with two kills, one ace and one block. Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had a match-high 11 digs, with two assists and an ace ace, while Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) had four kills, two digs and a block, and Jessica D'Auria (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) had four kills and four digs.

Jen Donnelly led Springfield with a match-high 12 kills, five digs and a block, Sara Labradorf tallied a match-high 24 assists to go along with eight digs, three aces, and a block, and Ashley Tanner recorded six aces and had three kills and a block.
