CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy's Avery O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.) has been named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, while teammate Maria Perez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) has earned NAC Volleyball Defensive Player accolades for the second-straight week.
O'Neal had a big week for the Mariners against five tough non-conference opponents, totaling 46 kills (2.56 k/s), 45 digs (2.50 d/s), 20 service aces (1.11 sa/s), seven assists and three total blocks. In the Mariners 3-1 loss to Colby, she tallied five kills, one dig, one ace and an assist. On Friday in a tough 3-2 loss to Western Connecticut College, O'Neal tallied a double-double of 18 digs, 11 kills and also contributed six aces and three assists. In the Mariners' 3-0 loss to Coast Guard she recorded nine kills, six digs, three aces and two assists. On Saturday, the junior led the Mariners to a two-match sweep averaging a double-double. In the 3-0 win over Oneonta she registered 11 kills, 10 digs, four aces, and assist and a block. In the 3-0 win over Connecticut College she had 10 kills, 10 digs, a match-high six aces and two blocks.
Perez helped lead the Mariners to a 2-3 week against five challenging non-conference opponents, and surpassed 1,000 career digs, becoming just the third player in program history to do so. The libero totaled 101 digs (6.31 d/s) and also chipped in with 10 assists, six aces, and a kill. Perez recorded double-digit digs in all five matches. In the Mariners' 3-1 loss to Colby, Perez tallied 26 digs, three assists and a kill. On Friday against Western Connecticut College in a tough 3-2 loss, the junior had 26 digs, and an assist and followed that up with 17 digs, three aces and an assist in the 3-0 loss to Coast Guard. Against Oneonta in a 3-0 victory, Perez tallied 18 digs and an assist. In the final match of the week, a 3-0 win over Connecticut College, she had 14 digs, four assists and three aces.
